They are by far the most common lifeform on Earth. Over 1.5 million different species of insects have been identified. Scientists believe that&#8217;s only a fraction of their totality. A team studied 63 protected areas in Germany over a 27 year period. They found a <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0185809\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">75% decline in insect population<\/a> (measured by biomass) over the two-plus decades.<\/figure><\/div><p>Biomass, in this context, is the total mass of organisms in a given area or volume. Biomass is also a type of renewable energy derived from plant and animal materials (you can learn more about it <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainablereview-com.preview-domain.com\/biogas-energy-manure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>). Basically, if you took a giant 300-foot tall bucket and weighed all the insects in these 63 protected wildlife areas, you would have a 75% lighter bucket after 27 years.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-2e76ca2f elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"2e76ca2f\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-3b478383\" data-id=\"3b478383\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ac8a9f6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ac8a9f6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Unfortunately, this German study is not an exception to global trends. Tropical and temperate climates face similar bug problems. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0006320718313636\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">This study from Biological Conversation<\/a> found that over 40% of insect species are at threat of extinction. Moths and butterflies, pollinators like bees, and dung beetles are most at risk.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/118\/2\/e2023989118#:~:text=Across%2016%20studies%2C%20insect%20populations,in%20the%20last%20four%20decades.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Similar research<\/a>\u00a0published in January 2021 observed 16 studies and determined that insect populations had declined by 45% in the last four decades.<\/p><h3>We need insects to survive<\/h3>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-6dbf6e8 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"6dbf6e8\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-94c84bd\" data-id=\"94c84bd\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-37be892 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"37be892\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>There are over a billion insects per human on Earth, and the majority of them play a critical role in the existence and persistence of humans. If the insect population continued to decline, human populations would inevitably follow suit.<\/p>\n<p>I talk a lot about the omnipresence of anthropocentrism in the climate and sustainability movement. There&#8217;s a method to the madness.<\/p><p>The truth is: without the process of pollination, many fruits, flowers and vegetables wouldn&#8217;t exist, and the world would have a lot less produce.<\/p><p><strong>Pest control:<\/strong> I know, this one seems like an oxymoron, but it&#8217;s true. Predatory and\/or parasitic insects play an important role in controlling pest populations.<\/p><p><strong>Decomposition:<\/strong> Some insects are primary or secondary decomposers.<\/p><p>That means they help take care of dead animals (and sometimes humans) and other waste that would only become an issue if these helpful decomposers didn&#8217;t exist.<\/p><p><strong>Food security: <\/strong>Insects serve as a nutritious food source for many animals and humans. Reptiles, birds, amphibians and mammals alike depend on insects for food and staying healthy.<\/p><p><strong>Research and innovation: <\/strong>Lastly, researchers can learn a lot from observing Nature. The modern airplane was inspired by bird flight.<\/p><p>Computer scientists created an algorithm called 'ant colony optimization&#8217; that was inspired by the societal structure of ant colonies. If you observe an individual ant, it is a quite simple, unsophisticated creature.<\/p><p>But when you combine the behaviors of thousands of ants and observe the colony as a whole, a web of simple creatures can create something quite sophisticated.
