These tiny pest-killing substances transformed food production forever, allowing for the development of the type of large-scale agriculture that feeds the Western world today.<\/p>\n<p>While some may see pesticides as a gift, the consequences are alarming. Bee colony collapse and reproductive issues are highly concerning.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What can we do?<\/strong> A \u201csystemic denial fueled<a href=\"https:\/\/ap.ohchr.org\/documents\/dpage_e.aspx?si=A\/HRC\/34\/48\"> by the pesticide and agroindustry\u201d<\/a> keep pesticides on the market. Luckily, the UN proposes <a href=\"https:\/\/ap.ohchr.org\/documents\/dpage_e.aspx?si=A\/HRC\/34\/48\">international guidelines <\/a>on regulating pesticides, while promoting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/3\/i9037en\/i9037en.pdf\">agroecology<\/a>: a practice which combines science and local knowledge to create community-based, agricultural systems.<\/p>\n<p>The UN found that agroecology can \u201cfeed the entire world population&#8221; while ensuring adequate nourishment. Agroecology is the engine for solving world hunger, without the associated risks of pesticide-use.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What can I do?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Research your local Congressman\u2019s stance on Pesticide Bans. Some health risks associated with pesticide-use include:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cancer, Alzheimer\u2019s and Parkinson\u2019s diseases<\/li>\n<li>Hormone disruption, developmental disorders, and sterility<\/li>\n<li>Neurological effects ( loss of: memory, motor skills, vision and coordination<\/li>\n<li>Asthma, allergies, and hypersensitivity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><em>According to the United Nations, pesticides cause at least <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/ap.ohchr.org\/documents\/dpage_e.aspx?si=A\/HRC\/34\/48\"><em>200,000 deaths each year.<\/em><\/a> Despite the clear risk, many pesticides and other toxic substances remain unregulated in the US.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8dcf177 elementor-widget elementor-widget-video\" data-id=\"8dcf177\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-settings=\"{&quot;youtube_url&quot;:&quot;https:\\\/\\\/www.youtube.com\\\/watch?v=eF_fbTbHdyg&quot;,&quot;video_type&quot;:&quot;youtube&quot;,&quot;controls&quot;:&quot;yes&quot;}\" data-widget_type=\"video.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-wrapper elementor-open-inline\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-video\"><\/div>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-0528f32 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"0528f32\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-d33a8df\" data-id=\"d33a8df\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-36e1b9d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"36e1b9d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Here\u2019s an example of why that matters:<\/p>\n<p>DDT (a harmful pesticide) was banned in 1972.<\/p>\n<p>However, the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention found DDE (which is DDT after the human body breaks it down) in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/biomonitoring\/pdf\/ddt_factsheet.pdf\">\u201cmost of the population\u201d<\/a> they sampled, thirty years after the product was banned!<\/p>\n<p>It remains unclear how long DDT lingers in the human body or the environment. Studies have found that <a href=\"https:\/\/documents-dds-ny.un.org\/doc\/UNDOC\/GEN\/G17\/017\/85\/pdf\/G1701785.pdf?OpenElement\">mothers can pass pesticides<\/a> to a developing fetus and to infants through breast milk. Pesticides are playing a very dangerous, unregulated game on human health.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What role does the Government play in pesticide regulation?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/exposurereport\/\">The United States\u2019 Fourth Report<\/a>, or the National Report on Human Exposure to Environmental Chemicals, tested U.S. citizens for 212 different environmental chemicals (many of which are found in pesticides).<\/p>\n<p>The Fourth Report states, \u201cFor most of the environmental chemicals included in [this report], more research is needed to determine whether exposure at the levels reported is a cause for health concern.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I read their entire statement, but could not find cautionary statements about these chemicals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Naturally, you may wonder why the CDC would have little information on the environmental substances encountered in the human body. Even DDT\u2014which has proven to linger in humans\u2014has not been clearly identified for its negative health effects by the CDC, being labeled as \u2018possibly\u2019 causing cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Why is the<a href=\"https:\/\/sustainablereview-com.preview-domain.com\/trump-approves-anwr-drilling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> government not clear<\/a> on what\u2019s a health threat and what isn\u2019t?<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The United Nations\u2019 Statement on Pesticide Regulation<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The United Nations states that governmental neglect of pesticide regulation has been \u201cexacerbated by a systematic denial, fueled by the pesticide and agroindustry\u201d as well as their unchallenged\u00a0 use of \u201cunethical\u201d and \u201caggressive marketing\u201d tactics.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In response, the United Nations aims to create a set of international guidelines and rules on reducing pesticide use, banning highly hazardous pesticides, and promoting agroecology.<\/p>\n<p>You can view their full proposal, <a href=\"https:\/\/ap.ohchr.org\/documents\/dpage_e.aspx?si=A\/HRC\/34\/48\">here<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Environmental concerns <\/strong>for pesticides<\/h2>\n<p>Unsurprisingly, pesticide exposure also severely harms other species besides humans.\u00a0 Organisms such as insect pollinators, invertebrates, amphibians, birds, and fish have experienced\u00a0 adverse effects from exposure to neonicotinoids and fipronil (two highly common insecticides in the United States).<\/p>\n<p>Here are some specific ways that pesticides harm species:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bees: Neonicotinoids make it difficult for bees to communicate. It suppresses their immune system, making them susceptible to viruses and verroamites (a main factor\/cause of colony collapse), reproductive issues, and a loss of navigational ability (they can\u2019t find their way home, get lost, and die).<\/li>\n<li>Crab larvae: damages their mitochondria, which leads to muscle paralysis, immune suppression, and bacterial and fungal infections.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Sea urchins: damage to DNA, leading to developmental abnormalities that pass down generations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/za2fU2Ny0hPBd8-OKLUKnC75PI4l5HXJTgSdyWhtOBwSVhI2Sv1GUGZBOAgisjBFq_f8YU_rE7d3SMRbnG7or3XMETfIMUcGuIlazW6hqqsgkY5p0k4bnMWJEdiaMQxI5shI3bcOj1BXfJDpmw\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Check out IUCN and The Task Force of Systemic Pesticides, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucn.org\/commissions\/commission-ecosystem-management\/our-work\/cems-task-forces\/systemic-pesticides\">here<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Agroecology: Do We NEED Pesticides?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The United Nations found an excessive use of pesticides, which violates ecosystem and human health rights.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of using pesticides, the United Nations seeks to use principles of agroecology to create different, sustainable ways of growing food.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Agroecology combines science with traditional and local agricultural practices to create a resilient agricultural system led by local communities. Communities work to\u00a0 identify the \u2018root\u2019 causes of an agricultural problem, and determine long-term solutions.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike our current band-aid approach, agroecology is adaptive, lasting for lifetimes. And that&#8217;s what <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainablereview-com.preview-domain.com\/sustainable-investing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sustainability<\/a> is all about. You can learn more about agroecology, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/3\/i9037en\/i9037en.pdf\">here<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/ap.ohchr.org\/documents\/dpage_e.aspx?si=A\/HRC\/34\/48\">UN<\/a> has found that \u201cagroecology is capable of delivering sufficient yields to feed the entire world population&#8221;, while ensuring adequate nourishment.<\/p>\n<p>The current food crisis we face is due not to a lack of food, but to a lack of proper distribution. With an increase in localized food production and smarter agricultural systems, the entire world could be fed, and we could drop the risks that pesticides inflict!<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What can I do to stop widespread pesticide use?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h5>Go to the farmers\u2019 market!<\/h5>\nBuying local, organic produce and supporting local farmers is a great initiative, although our larger food systems have a long way to go.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5>Grow your own garden!<\/h5>\nWhat better way is there to keep you and your household safe than by growing your own, pesticide-free produce?<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5>Vote in local elections!<\/h5>\nResearch your local Congressman\u2019s stance on Pesticide Bans.
