Here&#8217;s the speed read.<br><\/strong><\/h5><p><strong>How it stands<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Companies frequently implement corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs (which include sustainability initiatives) in order to improve their image in the eyes of investors and customers, which in turn boosts profits.<\/li>\n<li>But it is unclear if CSR programs actually make the world a better place<\/li>\n<li>Most of the information about a company\u2019s environmental footprint is only available through the company itself, presenting an obstacle to objective evaluation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Examples<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Coca-Cola claims to have reduced the water footprint of their drinks. But their calculations do not include the water used in the supply chain that provides the ingredients and packaging for the final product.<\/li>\n<li>CSR programs (like Coca-Cola\u2019s) often use offsets which instead of conserving limited resources lead to increased consumption.<\/li>\n<li>Unilever claims to use a scientific approach to sustainability, trying to reduce their own emissions instead of investing in offsets for carbon neutrality.<\/li>\n<li>More recently, Unilever announced the addition of carbon footprint labels on all products to increase transparency.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Bottom line<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>While the effectiveness of corporate sustainability programs is mixed, the fact that sustainability is on their radar and part of their marketing strategy is a big step forward.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t take everything you hear at face value. Take a deep dive into a company\u2019s sustainability practices and decide for yourself.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-38816d2a elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"38816d2a\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"has_eae_slider elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-2235a4bc\" data-id=\"2235a4bc\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-237e6b35 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"237e6b35\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3>The Challenges of Evaluating Corporations\u2019 Environmental Footprint<\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Most of the information about a company\u2019s environmental footprint is only available through the company itself &#8211; casting a doubt on its reliability. <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainablereview-com.preview-domain.com\/corporations-csr-goals-take-advantage-of-ppp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\">Mistrust of corporations<\/a> is justified. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/big-tobacco-kept-cancer-risk-in-cigarettes-secret-study\/\">Tobacco companies<\/a> suppressed evidence about the health risks of smoking. Food companies suppressed data showing how their products fueled the obesity epidemic and instead <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/2013\/aug\/07\/fat-profits-food-industry-obesity\">urged consumers<\/a> to eat \u2018healthy.\u2019&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Multiple metrics exist for assessing companies\u2019 environmental performance, but none are completely comprehensive. The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) promotes transparency by encouraging companies to report their emissions for assessment and ranking. Corporate Knights, a media and research company that promotes sustainability, also publishes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.corporateknights.com\/reports\/2019-global-100\/global-100-difference-15481154\/\">the Global 100,<\/a> a list of the 100 most environmentally and socially responsible companies. Dow Jones has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/d\/djones-sustainability-world.asp\">sustainability index<\/a> that selects and aggregates the most sustainable companies based on their environmental performances.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Coca-Cola and Unilever have received wildly different rankings and publicity for their sustainability practices. While Unilever ranks 65th on the Global 100 list, leads the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unilever.com\/news\/press-releases\/2018\/unilever-named-as-an-industry-leader-in-djsi.html\">Dow Jones Sustainabi<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unilever.com\/news\/press-releases\/2018\/unilever-named-as-an-industry-leader-in-djsi.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\">l<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unilever.com\/news\/press-releases\/2018\/unilever-named-as-an-industry-leader-in-djsi.html\">ity Index<\/a>, and features on the CDP A List in Climate Change, Forests and Water Security, Coca-Cola receives constant criticism for its environmentally harmful behavior. So, how do their sustainability programs compare?<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3>Are Coca-Cola\u2019s New Sustainability Goals Effective?<\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Coca-Cola has a history of unethical and environmentally harmful behavior. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/07\/14\/world\/americas\/mexico-coca-cola-diabetes.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\">San Crist\u00f3bal, Mexico,<\/a> Coca-Cola extracts 300,000 gallons of water a day. Meanwhile, residents lack access to clean drinking water. The most affordable and available alternative for residents is Coca-Cola sodas, which have fueled diabetes in the community. Similar injustices continue in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2020\/apr\/23\/pepsi-coke-bottled-water-consumer-reports\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\">Michigan<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thoughtco.com\/coca-cola-groundwater-depletion-in-india-1204204\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\">India<\/a>, and around the world.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, Coca-Cola outlined an impressive set of sustainability goals. For example, the corporation aims to recycle a bottle or can for each one they sell by 2030, replenish 100% of the water used in their drinks, and reduce 25% of the carbon footprint of a drink by 2020. While these goals seem impressive, they miss the mark.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coca-colacompany.com\/news\/improving-our-water-efficiency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\">Coca-Cola claims<\/a> to have reduced the 2.7 liters of water required per liter of product to 1.92 liters of water. One liter is the product itself and the remaining water is \u201cused in the manufacturing process, mostly for keeping equipment clean.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>But this calculation does not include the water footprint of the supply chain that provides the ingredients and packaging in the final product. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2018\/5\/31\/17377964\/coca-cola-water-sustainability-recycling-controversy-investigation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\">A 2008 Coca-Cola study<\/a> found that 35 liters of water are used to make every half-liter of Coke in Holland, with 28 liters accounted for just by the sugar beets which sweeten the beverage.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Therefore, Coca-Cola\u2019s purported water footprint is a mere fraction of the actual footprint. And Coca-Cola is not the only company that misrepresents facts. Many companies present figures that support easily attainable but ineffective sustainability goals to improve their public image.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3>Where CSR sustainability programs go awry<\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Another common feature of CSR sustainability programs is offsets. When Coca-Cola claims to replenish each drop of water it uses, the company financially supports organizations like the World Wildlife Fund and the Nature Conservancy\u2019s efforts to expand access to clean water around the world.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>While this seems benevolent, corporate offsets tend to encourage increased consumption of limited resources like water because offsets do not incentivize companies to reduce their own consumption and waste. (Reduction is a key tenet of sustainability!)<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Moreover, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2018\/5\/31\/17377964\/coca-cola-water-sustainability-recycling-controversy-investigation\">effectiveness<\/a> of these projects is not always clear. Coca-Cola claims in its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coca-colacompany.com\/content\/dam\/journey\/us\/en\/reports\/coca-cola-business-and-sustainability-report-2019.pdf\">2019 Business and Sustainability Report<\/a>, it supported 13 billion liters of water replenishment in India since 2009. But the company provides scant details on the calculations or specific projects behind those numbers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3>Has Unilever Cracked the CSR Sustainability Code?<\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Unilever in contrast claims to use a scientific approach to sustainability. To achieve the goals of the Paris Climate Accord, Unilever aims to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unilever.com\/sustainable-living\/reducing-environmental-impact\/greenhouse-gases\/\">halve greenhouse gas emissions<\/a> of products and source 100% of its energy renewably by 2030.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Unilever claims to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-06-14\/unilever-to-cut-emissions-to-zero-by-2039-adopt-carbon-labeling?sref=15BqVLSK\">avoid offsets<\/a> for carbon neutrality and tries to reduce emissions instead. And the company has prioritized the earth for a decade since Unilever launched its first sustainability plan in 2010.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>In June 2020, Unilever announced the addition of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-06-14\/unilever-to-cut-emissions-to-zero-by-2039-adopt-carbon-labeling?sref=15BqVLSK\">carbon footprint labels <\/a>to all products to increase transparency.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>As far as corporations go, Unilever is transparent about their performance. The company\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unilever.com\/sustainable-living\/reducing-environmental-impact\/\">website reports<\/a> progress on sustainability goals and the company is transparent about the goals they are not meeting.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Additionally, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unilever.com\/sustainable-living\/our-approach-to-reporting\/independent-assurance\/\">Unilever works with PwC<\/a> to ensure and create effective standards. But don\u2019t take everything you hear at face value.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>If you want to know about a company\u2019s environmental footprint, take a deep dive into their sustainability practice. Scrutinize their policies.
