Do you ever get that feeling of…could I be doing something more meaningful with my time?

We often find ourselves questioning whether what we do is impactful in some way. It’s our innate makeup, to contribute, to do better for our family, communities, and friends. But often we are stuck in a path that was scripted for us, spending many years educating ourselves, for a career that we didn’t quite understand but promised to pay the bills. It’s a common storyline…

Maybe its a post-pandemic awakening, but there has been a increase in people transitioning to more meaningful jobs, myself included, a tech executive on a tidy package working in big corporates that brought no realization if I was positively contributing to people’s lives. Now I do this, so if you are reading this… thank you!

Why The Hype?

The signs of change are everywhere. Record-breaking temperatures, intensifying storms, ocean cleanup efforts, sprawling wind farms on country landscapes, fashionable thrifting and electrified mobility on our streets. We’re witnessing a shift in consciousness: information is more accessible than ever, behaviors are evolving, and we’re demanding greater accountability. Green policies and investments are finally gaining traction which has become reflective in the job market. LinkedIn reports that three of the top ten fastest-growing jobs are in sustainability. Moreover, 56% of people have applied for roles outside their primary career path, and 70% want to work for companies with strong sustainability agendas. The surge in green jobs isn’t just a passing trend—it’s a necessary evolution towards a more sustainable future. As our world changes, so too must our approach to work and career development.

Could You Make a Green Change?

The good thing about Sustainability is it’s pertinent across almost every sector so many of the skills you may already possess could be easily transferrable for example an electrician could transition to solar installations, an accountant might become a carbon credit trader, a marketer could specialize in promoting sustainable products, and a farmer could explore Agri-tech. You may not even have to leave your organization with many companies prioritizing investment in sustainability objectives. Alternatively, you could re-skill entirely, pursuing higher qualifications in sustainability-related fields. Another option is to venture into entrepreneurship, such as launching an eco-product startup – an endeavor with lower barriers to entry than ever before. The possibilities in the sustainability sector are truly vast.

Step-By-Step Guide: How To Get Started with Your Sustainability Career

1. Assess Your Skills and Passions 💪

First things first: What are you good at, and what gets you fired up? Take some time to reflect on your strengths and interests. The great thing about sustainability is that it requires all kinds of skills—from technical know-how to creative thinking and everything in between, so there’s definitely a place for you here.

2. Get Educated (without Spreading Your Wallet Thin) 📚

Its most likely up-skilling will happen on your own watch so thankfully most knowledge channels are accessible online, on-demand. Do your research and find something thats credible, in line with your interest, suits your time-to-learn capacity, and most kind to your wallet of course.

  • Online courses: Platforms like Coursera, edX, and Udemy offer affordable sustainability courses
  • Professional certifications: Look into programs like LEED, GRI, or ISSP for industry-recognized credentials
  • Workshops and webinars: Many organizations offer free or low-cost events to learn about specific sustainability topics

Remember, you don’t need a PhD in Environmental Science to make a difference. Sometimes, a solid foundation and a willingness to learn on the job are all you need.

3. Network Like Your Planet Depends on It (Because It Kind of Does) 🤝

In the sustainability world, who you know can be just as important as what you know. Here are some ways to expand your green network:

  • Join professional associations like the International Society of Sustainability Professionals
  • Attend sustainability conferences and events (virtual ones count, too!)
  • Volunteer for environmental organizations or sustainability projects
  • Engage with sustainability professionals on LinkedIn and Twitter

Pro tip: Don’t be afraid to reach out to people for informational interviews. Most folks in this field are passionate about their work and love sharing their experiences.

4. Gain Experience (Even If It’s Not Your Day Job… Yet) 🧑‍🔬

Building sustainability experience doesn’t have to mean quitting your job and joining Greenpeace tomorrow (although if that’s your jam, go for it!). Consider these options:

  • Start a sustainability initiative at your current workplace
  • Take on pro bono consulting projects for local non-profits
  • Participate in community sustainability efforts
  • Start a blog or podcast about sustainability topics you’re passionate about

Every bit of experience counts and shows potential employers that you’re serious about making a difference.

5. Tailor Your Resume and Cover Letter 📄

When you’re ready to start applying for sustainability jobs, make sure your application materials speak the language of the industry. Highlight relevant skills, experiences, and passion projects that demonstrate your commitment to sustainability.

And please, for the love of all things green, don’t start your cover letter with “I’ve always been passionate about the environment.” Hiring managers have seen that one too many times than they’ve seen plastic bottles wash up on shores. Express your passion and good intentions creatively and in a way that reflects the real you.

Hunting For Sustainability Opportunities

As green jobs become more prevalent, they’re gaining prominence on popular job platforms. Additionally, new websites dedicated to sustainability positions are emerging. Here’s a list of effective ways to search for these opportunities:

  • Specialized job boards: Check out sites like GreenBiz Jobs, Sustainability Career Hub, and Conservation Job Board
  • LinkedIn: Use keywords like “sustainability,” “ESG,” “renewable energy,” and “circular economy” in your job search
  • Company websites: Many large corporations now have dedicated sustainability teams
  • Government jobs: Local, state and federal agencies often have environmental and sustainability-focused positions
  • Non-profits and NGOs: Organizations like WWF, The Nature Conservancy, and WRI frequently hire sustainability professionals

Pro tip: Set up job alerts on these platforms so you don’t miss out on any opportunities.
